Flooring

What is pitch pine?

Pitch pine is a species of pine tree with a high resin content, which gives it an attractive grain pattern and protects it from rot and decay. It is also very hardwearing and dense - ideal for high quality, solid wooden flooring with a traditional look.

For more information about pitch pine and reclaimed wood, please see our Pitch Pine Floorboards page.

Is pitch pine a good wood species for flooring?

Pitch pine is ideal for wooden flooring. It’s very hardwearing, has few knots, and takes a finish well. It also has a distinctive grain pattern and colouring, and is even 29% more stable than oak flooring!

What type of flooring do you sell?

We sell Scandinavian Redwood Pine Flooring and Reclaimed Pitch Pine Flooring.

All of these are solid wood floorboards, available in either a tongue and groove or straight edge finish.

What length floorboards will I receive in my order?

Your floorboards will range from around 1-3 metres in length. If you have selected delivery, the maximum length of floorboard will be 2.4m.

Is your pitch pine flooring reclaimed?

Our flooring is made from reclaimed beams which we process to make newly manufactured floorboards. Due to the nature of reclaimed wood, your flooring will have some characterful imperfections, such as nail holes, which we think it looks all the better for!

Where do the pitch pine beams come from?

We use reclaimed pitch pine beams to make our flooring, sourced from old buildings, such as mills, factories and workshops, that have been taken down, ready for a new lease of life! Most of the beams are more than 200 years old.

Where is the flooring manufactured?

All our flooring is made in the UK in our family-run workshop in Harrogate, North Yorkshire.

Ordering

How do I work out the quantity of flooring I need?

Measure the length and width of your room in metres and multiply the two figures to give the area in square metres. It is generally recommended for wood flooring that you add an extra 10-25% to this figure to allow for cutting during installation. Laying onto joists can result in larger losses so you will need to order extra.

Is there a minimum order size?

Yes, there is a minimum order size of 5m2.

How long does it take from ordering to receiving my floorboards?

It’s usually a 1-4 week turnaround depending on the type of flooring ordered, but lead times are sometimes longer during busy periods. All our flooring is made to order so processing times vary depending on order size and current order volumes. If you would like know our current timeframes, please get in touch.

Can I come and see your flooring before placing my order?

Yes, just contact us to arrange a visit. You can compare the various oaks and pines, and take a look at the edging options to decide whether straight edge or tongue and groove floorboards are best for your project. Alternatively, you can order a sample for delivery.

What are your payment options?

We accept card payments via our website or if you prefer, you can pay via bank transfer.

Installation

Can I install my flooring straightaway?

Before laying wooden flooring, it’s generally recommended that you store your floorboards in the room where they’ll be laid to give them chance to settle, ideally for a couple of weeks. Wood is a natural material and needs time to adjust to a new environment and temperature.

Do you recommend sanding the flooring after installation?

Your floorboards will be planed smooth and flat but it is standard practice to sand wooden flooring once it is installed, prior to applying a finish. For installation or finishing guidance, consult your builder or flooring installer.
