What Does a 6mm Wear Layer Mean on Engineered Oak Flooring?

What Does a 6mm Wear Layer Mean on Engineered Oak Flooring?

When you look at engineered oak flooring, one of the most important numbers on the specification is the wear layer — the thickness of real oak on the surface of the board. Our European engineered oak has a 6mm solid oak wear layer. Here’s what that actually means, and why it matters.

What Is a Wear Layer?

Engineered oak is built in layers. The top layer is real oak (the part you see and walk on). Underneath is a stable core, usually plywood or softwood, that helps the board resist movement.

The wear layer is simply the thickness of that top oak layer, measured in millimetres.

  • Thin wear layers (2–3mm) are common on cheaper engineered floors
  • Medium layers (4–5mm) offer a better balance
  • A 6mm wear layer is generous and sits at the higher end of what is typically available

Our 21mm boards use a 6mm European oak wear layer bonded to a 15mm birch plywood core.

Why Thickness Matters

1. Future refinishing
Over time, any real wood floor can pick up scratches, dents or wear in high-traffic areas. A thicker wear layer gives you the option to lightly sand and refinish the floor later. With only 2–3mm of oak, there is very little material to work with. At 6mm you have meaningful depth for careful future sanding, which can extend the life of the floor by many years.

2. Feel and substance
A thicker oak layer feels more solid underfoot and looks more like a traditional oak floor. Combined with a full 21mm board thickness, it gives a premium, substantial feel.

3. Longevity
The wear layer is the part that takes daily use. Starting with more oak on the surface means the floor can absorb years of living before any refinishing is needed, and still have life left afterwards.

How 6mm Compares with Thinner Layers

Wear layer Typical use Refinishing potential Feel
2–3mm Budget engineered floors Very limited Lighter
4–5mm Mid-range Some scope Good
6mm Higher-quality engineered Meaningful future sanding Substantial

A 6mm layer does not make the floor “solid oak,” but it closes much of the practical gap for everyday domestic use and long-term care.

Does a Thicker Wear Layer Affect Stability?

No — stability comes mainly from the core. Our boards use a cross-laminated birch plywood core, which is what makes them suitable for modern homes and underfloor heating. The 6mm oak surface sits on top of that stable construction, so you get both a generous real-oak layer and good dimensional stability.

What This Means for Your Project

If you want engineered oak that:

  • Looks and feels like quality real oak
  • Can be lightly refinished in the future
  • Works with wider boards and underfloor heating
  • Offers strong long-term value

…then a 6mm wear layer is a significant advantage over thinner alternatives.

Our 21mm European engineered oak flooring is supplied unfinished, ready for oil, hardwax oil or lacquer, in widths from 140mm to 220mm. Samples are available so you can see the oak colour and grain in your own home before ordering.
