We recently posted a blog detailing our reclaimed pitch pine flooring process, and mentioned that one of the first and most crucial steps to making reclaimed pine floorboards is finding and extracting the metal objects buried within.
Some of the nails, bolts and screws are quick to find, being visible on the surface, but others require a metal detector and can take some real elbow grease to pull out!
The nail in the pictures above was buried deep and caused a lot of trouble - it turned out to be 9” long so it’s no wonder!
But the great thing about nails and other foreign objects is that they add so much character to the finished pitch pine flooring. Holes, nail bleeds, cracks and imperfections give reclaimed pine flooring a more authentic, aged look in rooms where new solid wood flooring would look out of place. So if you’re looking for something in-keeping with a period property or just like that more characterful charm, take a look at our reclaimed pitch pine flooring for more details and photos.
